Fediverse

Fediverse

What is the Fediverse?

An ecosystem of federated social networks: servers freely run by the community and connected to each other. Each node is independent, but talks to the others through the same protocol.

A group of different people

Why the Fediverse

Unlike traditional social networks, the Fediverse is decentralized: you control your experience and your data. Thanks to open protocols such as ActivityPub or the Diaspora Federation Protocol you connect automatically and interact with people on different platforms, keeping your freedom and privacy.

A new, free way of socialising, built on collaboration rather than on the control of huge corporations.

Diaspora*

An open-source social network, made of pods

Diaspora* is an open-source, Facebook-like social network that is part of the Fediverse. Users sign up on independent pods (nodes) that talk to each other: each one is run on its own, for real decentralization.

  • It respects users’ privacy
  • It is run by its users, on independent servers (the pods)
  • It gives you full control over your data and your connections
  • With aspects (Friends, Family, Work…) you choose who sees each post, or make it public

Why use diaspora?

1. Control over your data

  • No algorithms analyse your posts for advertising.
  • You can keep your data on a server you trust, or run your own pod.
  • You can export your data at any time.

2. Privacy first

  • No tracking and no selling of personal data to third parties.
  • You decide what to share and with whom, thanks to aspects.
  • No ads: the focus is on content.

3. Decentralization

  • There is no single place where a company stores your information: pods are spread worldwide.
  • If a pod stops, you move your data to another one without losing your network.

4. Free content

  • No manipulated feed: posts appear in chronological order, with no promoted content.
  • No censorship, but common sense and respect for others and for the law.

5. Friendship, fun or a safe outlet

  • Connect with whoever you like and show what you like: with aspects you decide who sees what.

6. Part of an ethical movement

  • Using diaspora means supporting a free and decentralized web, away from the monopoly of big tech companies.

So, diaspo*?

The Italian pod of diaspora

Diaspo* is the Italian pod of diaspora: an Italian-language social network that is ethical, privacy-friendly and decentralized. It is run by a small group of IT professionals from Varazze (SV), open-source enthusiasts, on part of the infrastructure of their company, dueclic.

Using diaspo is not just using a tool: it is a declaration of independence from the control of big tech companies.

The Fediverse bridge

Disbigle brings together both halves of the Fediverse

The Fediverse speaks two languages: ActivityPub (Mastodon, Misskey, Pixelfed…) and the diaspora* protocol (diaspora*, Friendica, Hubzilla). Disbigle, the new social network made by the people behind diaspo*, speaks both: one account, one timeline, one conversation across networks.

As diaspora is in the Fediverse, diaspo is in the DiaspoVerse 🌍
